Ahead of strong weather warnings, St John Ambulance (Qld) is urging Queenslanders to be prepared for disasters by learning basic first aid and ensuring their kits and equipment are up to date.

St John (Qld) Commissioner Dr Angus McDonell knows firsthand the improved outcomes when communities are prepared.

“We are not strangers to witnessing firsthand the crippling affects a strong storm or cyclone can have on the community which is why it is important to begin planning now,” Angus said.

Last year, there were eight disaster relief activations, including two tropical cyclones and five severe weather events throughout the State

“In a disaster, vital services can be cut off for several days due to powerlines, flooding or delays,” he said.

Angus said to ensure your family is protected by having an up-to-date first aid kit in the home and car.

“Knowing how to treat minor injuries such as cuts, grazes or minor infection will ease the pressure on emergency services,” he said.

Angus said all St John first aid courses provided attendees with hands on experience through simulated exercises.

“A piece of paper stating you know first aid will not help you in a time of need; having simulated exercises and practice through St John will give you the confidence to help someone during a disaster,” he said.

“In the event of a disaster, St John Ambulance (Qld) crews will be onsite at selected evacuation centres to offer first aid, medical assistance and transport to those in need.”

St John Ambulance kits are tried and tested by more than 17,000 volunteers every day. Last year, hundreds of St John volunteers were deployed to emergency evacuation centres across Queensland in the State’s greatest time of need.
