Living independently is a challenge as we age, especially if we are living alone. Many older people and those with disabilities, are faced with moving into residential care prematurely due to lack of regular support.

For those who are unable to drive or catch public transport, going about daily activities - such as shopping, visiting a GP or catching up with family - can become difficult.

St John Ambulance Social Services Manager Julie Karklis said transport is essential to allow people to attend important medical appointments as well as to remain involved in their community and maintain quality of life.

St John Community Transport provides assisted transport options to eligible people living in Wide Bay.

“Being able to catch up with friends, attend social activities or enjoy a shopping trip through the assistance of St John community transport, can increase a person’s sense of independence,” Julie said.

The St John Silver Cord telephone reassurance service is another great way for people who feel isolated to remain connected in their community

“Silver Cord callers ensure that you are well and safe by phoning every day as a security measure, or less frequently for a friendly and caring chat,” Julie said. “For some people, it may be the only call they receive all day.”

The Silver Cord Service can also be used short term when family members, who would otherwise regularly check up on their elderly relatives, are away on holiday.
